Etiquette

Table tennis at Devonport is competitive on the table and friendly off it. A few simple courtesies keep it that way:

• Respect the rally. Don't walk behind or between tables while a point is being played, wait for the ball to be dead.
• Call it honestly. Edges, lets and touched balls, call them against yourself when you see them. Your opponent will do the same.
• Return stray balls politely. Roll or hand the ball back to the server between points, and return balls from other tables when play stops.
• Shake hands. Before and after every match, opponents and umpire included.
• Keep it encouraging. Celebrate your winners, not your opponent's mistakes. Juniors and new players especially take their cue from the room.
• Wear non-marking shoes and help pack tables, nets and barriers away at the end of the night.
• Running late or can't make it? Let your captain know as early as you can so fill-ins can be arranged.
